"New" Mosin Nagant

1 Attachment(s)
Well, new to me.

This is my second one. It is in much better shape overall than my other one, and a decade younger too. Grabbed it at the local shop with the bayonet, ammo pouches, etc. I'm cleaning it up today and taking it to the range tomorrow. :yippee:

No rust at all on the bolt, and no slop in it either, it is tight.

I'm beginning to worry. I'm a hopeless collector of 'stuff'. These were made for too many years. I'm going to need a larger gun safe.

I take that is a 91-30? Great rifle, I want one too, as well as another M38 that I want to use a project gun. The M38 that I currently have is in too nice of a condition to do that to.

MN91/30 packages (rifle, sling, ammo pouch, bayonet,...) are selling for $70-$80 from AIM. Brick & mortar shops may sell them for around $100 or thereabouts.

Yes, Mosin Nagants are neat rifles. You can't eat just one!

In terms of price appreciation, that hasn't happened much yet except for scarce varieties such as the 1943 fields trial MN44 carbine, or nearly any/all Finnish Mosin Nagants.

.

SOG (Southern Ohio Guns) has them $69. Or 3 for $59 a piece.

Sounds like a good price. AIM's were (at least when I ordered mine a couple months ago) $69 for round receiver, $79 for hex receiver (older rifles). These are refinished to very good/excellent external condition. When the "refinished to excellent" rifles first showed up years ago, they were selling for ~$100.

Then again, once upon a time (5-10 years ago), you could get 3 beat up ("good condition") MN91/30 from Century for $100. I've still got some of those. Ugly, dry wood, but they still work just fine.

This one is really nice. The markings show it as arsenal refinished and the tightness and appearance reflect that. I paid 120 locally for my first and 150 for my 'new' one.

Not complaining one bit. I don't have a C&R license and being able to see something before I buy it is important to me.

The outside had been cleaned but the chamber and barrel were full of cosmoline. I need to get in some of the crannies and remove that before I take it to the range. I'm hopeful it will shoot well. I'll post back and let you know.

Oh, and yes, Ag_Man this is a 91/30.

The new Big 5 Sporting goods ad came with the paper today. They have model M91/30's on sale for $89.00. I think I'm gonna cash in enough pennies to get one. Easy way to justify another purchase when it's that cheap, and you've got enough pennies to buy! I've already got one of the shorter barreled versions, and have been wanting to get the "Long Tom" to play around with as a sniper rifle.

Blorp, how do you go about figuring the date of manufacture? Is that the date on top of the receiver? I paid for my 91/30 today, can't pick it up til the 10th.

Re: "New" Mosin Nagant

On MN rifles, you'll find a rifle assembly date on top of the barren shank (in front of the receiver itself). Date of receiver manufacture is frequently stamped underneath the receiver tang.

This is important if you're trying to find an "antique" rifle for purposes of avoiding federal or local gun rules. For example, a Finn MN39 rifle made in 1941, assembled on a 1897 receiver would be considered an "antique" under federal law, not a firearm (unless your state has an additional regulation defining even antiques as firearms).

Thanks for the info. My model 38 is stamped "1943" on top.
